Coastal Resilience Center researcher and University of Rhode Island professor of oceanography Dr. Isaac Ginis is featured in a recent NPR article about his team’s new research on the combined threat of rising sea levels and extreme weather focuses on coastal areas in New England.
Researchers at the University of Rhode Island and Penn State University have been awarded a four-year, $1.5 million grant through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to study the effects of sea level rise and how it may exacerbate the impact of extreme weather.
As the weekend of August 21, 2021 drew near, it became increasingly evident that Tropical Storm Henri would not only impact Southern New England, but could become a hurricane before making landfall. This situation gave researchers at the University of Rhode Island (URI) a chance to test out the real-time storm modeling capabilities of the Rhode Island Coastal Hazards, Analysis, and Modeling Prediction (RICHAMP) system.

Dr. Owusu-Daaku and his team of students traveled back to Calhoun County in early December 2019 to present their findings.
